Thanksgliding 2020: A borrowed board, waist high peelers, and charged batteries

This was my first Thanksgiving in California and thanks to a friend’s generosity I rode an 11’9” Glider by Chris Christensen. If you don’t know what a Glider is, read this excellent description from Ryan Burch’s website:

”Gliders are big boards built with speed in mind. Typically made in the 11 foot range, the glider is a cross country surfboard that is great to cruise the line ups on small clean days. The challenge of riding gliders is controlling them at speed. The size of the boards allow you to pick up and plane off the most minute bits of energy. These boards are a thrill to ride, and linking sections all the way to shore is as rewarding as tearing the top off on a shortboard.”

On Thanksgiving, we were blessed with waist high waves, and I actually charged my GoPro batteries!

To the untrained eye, riding a glider may look like a snoozefest. But trust me it’s a blast! The extra weight of the board increases your momentum. And surprisingly you use a smaller fin, which keeps it nimble.

The actual hardest part of a glider is carrying one or storing it. But the truth is no other board that could increase your wave count this significantly since you can ride a ripple.

I hope everyone scored some kind of stoke on Thanksgiving and thanks for watching! I’m also super grateful for Los Peeps for providing the awesome soundtrack. Check out their site.
