King Tide: Low

On Dec 13-15, the Pacific Ocean experienced the second King Tide of the year. This event occurs when the tides are at their highest and lowest levels.

My wife and I visited La Jolla Tide Pools during the low tide at about 3:30pm on Dec 13th. We had an awesome time exploring the tide pools, looking for sea life, and taking in the rare beauty of the cove and La Jolla marine reserve.

Sometimes I wondered if it was a good idea for everyone to be walking on the reef. But it’s truly hard not to go see it for yourself. It’s hard not to wonder the effect of the reef crunching underneath foot.

So, I tried to limit my time trampling all over it, and found it enjoyable to gaze and watch from far too.

Every time I enter the ocean, I’m struck by the strangeness of its creatures--their sometimes alien-like forms. And I look forward to a time when humans fall in love with the beauty of the ocean--and see them as aquariums worth protecting. I think it’s important for the human imagination to know that such strange biodiversity is a reality and exists right now in our lifetimes!

Thanks for watching and may your explorations be plentiful.
