It’s been eight years since I started traveling to El Salvador for surfing. It’s a place I think of often. Especially when the waves are small or flat on the East Coast. Or when I’m between jobs. Which happens to be both at the moment (that’s how I have time for this!)
Looking back at this video—I can tell you a lot has changed in El Salvador. They continue to modernize each year I return. It’s true that it used to be dangerous. But not in the touristy parts. And things have gotten better everywhere. From a difficult past—a strong phoenix arises.
People often ask me for advice about El Salvador. Go! It’s a safe place where you can surf consistent breaks near a laid back town called El Tunco with lots of delicious restaurants and a growing yoga culture as well. The nightlife is fun and lots of talented local musicians can be found at places that range from laid back to a little more raucous on Friday and Saturday nights.
Check out reviews on Trip Advisor for specific recommendations. There are so many different places to stay which will contribute greatly to your trip as far as access to waves, good food, nightlife, surf camp, yoga or whatever the perfect combination of things depending on your skill level.
Enjoy and see you in the water!
